Today, I’m pleased to announce Whipped: the secret world of party discipline will be screening in Ontario later this month.
This timely documentary exposes - via candid interviews with past and present politicians - the forces that prevent our elected representatives from standing up for their constituents or even their own conscience in Canada’s legislatures.
The impact of party discipline has recently made national headlines, with Edmonton-St. Alberta MP Brent Rathgeber calling on government backbenchers to stop voting “like trained seals” following his decision to quit the Conservative caucus.
The screenings - which are being sponsored by Your Canada, Your Constitution - will take place on June 20 in Ottawa, June 22 in Toronto and June 24 in Waterloo.
Democracy Watch is co-sponsoring the screening in Ottawa, while the Waterloo screening is being co-sponsored by Fair Vote Canada (Kitchener-Waterloo Chapter), as well as the area’s Liberal, New Democrat and Green riding associations.
I’ll be speaking at the screenings, as part of a panel discussion about the issue of party discipline. For more information, please visit Your Canada, Your Constitution’s event page.
